Can the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Actually Handle Light Off-Roading?

Apr 4, 2026

The new Subaru Uncharted is a rugged compact electric crossover. But what is a car named "Uncharted" actually like when the pavement ends? Today, we're finding out if Subaru's electric crossover is worthy of its rugged name.

The Geometry of Adventure

While it shares a platform with the Toyota C-HR, Subaru has given the Uncharted a specific "lift" and suspension tune to ensure it maintains the brand's rugged DNA. With 8.3 inches of ground clearance, it clears the same obstacles as a standard Crosstrek, but the EV platform provides a much lower center of gravity for added stability on uneven terrain.

Off-Road Amenities & Tech

Ground Clearance: 8.3 inches (Standard) — Leading the subcompact EV class for obstacle clearance.

Approach Angle: 17 Degrees — Designed to tackle steep trailhead entries without scraping the front fascia.

Departure Angle: 27 Degrees — A surprisingly high exit angle thanks to the short rear overhangs.

Breakover Angle: 19 Degrees — Vital for protecting the underfloor 74.7 kWh battery when cresting mounds.

Wading Depth: 19.7 Inches — Sealed electrical internals allow for confident water crossings and deep puddle navigation.

Dual-Function X-MODE®: Features specialized logic for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud to manage motor torque and wheel slip.

Grip Control: An off-road cruise control system that maintains a steady low-speed crawl, letting the driver focus entirely on steering through tight spots.

Symmetrical AWD: A 338-hp dual-motor setup (Sport & GT trims) that can independently adjust power to all four wheels in milliseconds.

StarTex Seating: Water-repellent seating for the mud you'll probably track in (Sport & GT trims)

360° Surround View: Features a "trail-view" mode to spot rocks or drops that are usually hidden from the driver's seat.

The Verdict

The Uncharted isn't a rock crawler, but for the "Overlanding Lite" crowd, it's a game-changer. With a turning radius nearly identical to the Crosstrek and 338 horsepower on tap, it's nimble enough for tight trails and punchy enough to feel like a rally car.
