The 2027 Rivian R2 Lives Up To The Hype

Oct 2, 2026

2027 Rivian R2 Review & Trim Breakdown

The 2027 Rivian R2 is the brand's first mass-market EV and its third model after the R1T and R1S. Deliveries began on June 9, 2026, with the Performance Launch Edition starting at $59,485, or $22,400 less than the entry-level R1T. A Standard RWD model is set to arrive in 2027 for $46,485. Built on Rivian's all-new midsize platform, the R2 is smaller, simpler, and easier to manufacture, measuring about 3 inches shorter than a Tesla Model Y.

Despite skipping air suspension, the R2 is genuinely trail-ready with 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25-degree approach angle, 19.7 inches of water fording, and a 4,400-pound tow rating. The Performance trim makes 656 horsepower and hits 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, while the 87.9 kWh battery delivers an EPA-rated 330 miles. In our real-world highway testing, though, range landed closer to 270 to 280 miles. Add in a class-leading 5.2 cubic foot frunk, 28.7 cubic feet of rear cargo space, and DC fast charging that beat Rivian's own 10 to 80% claim, and the R2 makes a strong case as one of the best all-around EVs on the market.
