Ford Mustang Mach-E Guide

Ford Mustang Mach-E has quickly secured its position as one of the most popular EVs and a viable alternative for other mid-sized SUVs, such as Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Kia EV6. But what should you know about its model years and trim options?

In late December 2020, Ford began delivering its muscle-esque Mustang Mach-E crossover to customers. The Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s first electric vehicle built from the ground up, and for a first attempt car, it’s quite impressive. Offering several motor and two battery configurations, the Mach-E can fit various consumer needs, depending on trim. The Mustang Mach-E was the first non-Tesla electric car to breach the 300-mile range threshold.

Depending on trim, the Mach-E offers between 211 and 312 miles of range. For its power output, the Mach-E produces 266 to 480 horsepower, making it a capable performance machine in top-spec guises. Despite its impressive range and performance, the Mach-E also ticks the practicality box. With space for five people and a spacious trunk and frunk, the Blue Oval’s pony-inspired crossover serves as a highly usable daily driver. Paired with its sharp yet smooth lines, the Mach-E makes for a compelling electric crossover.

However, thanks to the addition of many trims and packages, finding the right one in the secondhand market might take some work. Ford offers four main trim levels: Select, Premium, California, and California Route-1. Ford offers some additional packages within most trim levels, leading to many combinations. A Mach-E equipped with no options won’t have basic features like a power liftgate or heated seats, whereas a highly-equipped one will have everything from a panoramic glass roof to a Bang and Olufsen audio system.

How Ford Mustang Mach-E Trims Differ in Practice?

Select (AWD and RWD)

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Select trim offers a limited array of features and options. Equipped with the Active-X seating, the Select offers LED headlamps, wireless phone charging, Ford’s Co-Pilot technology (the car can guide itself in individual lanes), and nicely-appointed Active-X seats. However, in terms of luxury features, there aren’t many. For instance, heated seats, a power liftgate, and power passenger seats all come at the expense of options or are entirely unavailable for specific model years.

Ford offered two packages for the 2021 model year: Comfort/Technology and Comfort/Appearance Package. The latter includes upgraded wheels, a power liftgate, heated front seats and steering wheel, and memory functionality for the driver seat and mirrors. The former includes everything the Comfort/Appearance Package includes (minus the wheels), adding BlueCruise with hands-free driving and a 360-degree camera.

In 2022, Ford removed the Comfort/Appearance Package from its list of options, leaving just the Comfort/Technology Package available.

For the 2023 model year, Ford equipped all models with BlueCruise 1.2 hardware (90 days included), enabling hands-free driving and lane changes with the click of the blinker. Additionally, there’s only one package available, called the Comfort Package Lite: it includes heated passenger and driver seats (memory for the latter), a heated steering wheel, and power-folding mirrors.

Premium (AWD and RWD)

The Mach-E Premium comes well-equipped regardless of battery configuration (Standard or Extended Range). With a glass roof, a Bang and Olufsen audio system, and BlueCruise (hands-free driving system) included as standard, the Premium rivals luxury cars in terms of equipment. The Mach-E Premium doesn’t offer many upgrades, save the limited-time Ice White and Nite Pony packages.

For the 2023 model year and beyond, Ford’s Nite Pony package is available, blacking out the wheels and exterior emblems.

California Route 1 (AWD and RWD)

Initially offered as a RWD-only vehicle, Ford began offering the California Route 1 Mach-E variant with optional AWD for the 2022 model year. After finding more customers who preferred the dual motor setup, the automaker made the California Route 1 available with AWD as standard for the 2023 model year.

This trim is suited to be the longest-range Mustang Mach-E, offering between 300 and 312 miles of range, depending on the model year. Unlike the Premium, this lacks features like premium audio and a power liftgate.

GT (AWD)

Like its gasoline-powered counterpart, the GT is the pinnacle of the lineup. Featuring 480 horsepower and more aggressive styling techniques, the Mach-E GT is a muscle car rivaling crossover. Options-wise, the GT is well-equipped, though the Performance Edition steps things up a bit. With an upgraded suspension system, more torquey front motor, race-style front seats, and 20” wheels.

For the 2023 model year and beyond, an $800 Nite Pony package is available, blacking out the wheels and exterior emblems.
